Rock Show

As lead vocalist for hard-rockers System of a Down, Serj Tankian mixed political commentary with a sense of humor. Capable of death metal growls and smooth, melodic, near-operatic phrasing, Tankian brings his impressive vocal abilities to his new solo record, “Elect the Dead.” As part of the new package tour Band Camp 2008, Tankian joins Filter, Ashes Divide, Hurt, Theory of a Deadman and Jacksonville’s Shinedown on Friday, May 9 from 3-11 p.m. at Jacksonville Equestrian Center, 13611 Normandy Blvd., Jacksonville. Tickets range from $25-$40. One dollar from each ticket sold benefits Jacksonville’s USO. 353-3309.

Like many of the inns on Amelia Island, the Hoyt House enjoys a rich history — literally. Built in 1905 for banker Fred Hoyt and his family, the 10-bedroom house is just as fancy as it was the day Mr. Moneypants moved in more than a century ago. The Hoyt House is one of seven inns on Amelia Island’s Bed and Breakfast Tour, held from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, May 10. Addison on Amelia, Amelia Island Williams House, Elizabeth Pointe Lodge, Fairbanks House, Florida House Inn and Ash Street Inn are also included on the tour. The inns’ private gardens are open to the public. Tickets are $20, and are available at any of the participating inns. 277-0500.

Even if you watched every one of the 200-plus episodes of the television series “The Waltons,” you’d be hard-pressed to find a segment during which Richard Thomas, who played John-Boy, got POed. Even in the Stephen King thriller “It,” during which Thomas battled a crazy beast-clown played by Tim Curry, he remained relatively calm. Now the mild-mannered actor finally gets a chance to raise his dander in “Twelve Angry Men.” Yes, he plays one of the angry men, Juror 8, to be exact. The classic courtroom drama is staged Tuesday through Sunday, May 13-18 in Moran Theater at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts, 300 W. Water St., Jacksonville. Tickets range from $26-$68. 632-3373.
