Folio Weekly's Featured Concert

Kenny Neal

A blues guitarist speaks through his ax, and Kenny Neal’s tells many a story. One look at Neal’s road-weary Telecaster — with its worn fretboard and scratched-all-to-hell

finish — and it’s obvious the man has played his heart out on that thing. Born into a blues family in 1957, Neal was given his first harmonica by Slim Harpo at age 3 and was playing bass in Buddy Guy’s band by the time he was 17. But the pull of the six-string is strong, and at Guy’s urging, Neal was soon bringing his own swampy sound to the stage. Neal’s new album, “Let Life Flow,” is due out on Saturday, May 10, the day he performs at Mojo Kitchen, 1500 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach. 247-6636.

Just Teriffic

                                           Teriffic Kid

Click on the link for the song “Karma and the Devil” at Terrific Kid’s MySpace page, and a sweet-ass picture of David Lee Roth in full air-split pops up. The party-hearty image stands in stark contrast to the blistering hardcore tune that accompanies it, but let’s not forget that Diamond Dave himself once ran with the devil. For those of you who like your hardcore a little soft around the edges, the Pensacola five-piece has its lighter side, too — albeit one that only shows itself for moments at a time. Terrific Kid performs with Love She Wrote, Stages and Stereos and Don’t Sigh Daisy on Tuesday, May 6 at Jack Rabbits, 1528 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville. 398-7496.

Melody Maker

                                          Stephen Marley

As may have been expected, Bob Marley’s brood has been especially musical. And as may have been expected, the Marley kids have covered everything from authentic reggae to funk, hip hop and R&B. Stephen Marley’s debut release, “Mind Control” (Tuff Gong/Ghetto records) falls comfortably into the R&B column. Yes, it’s reggae at its core, but Stephen Marley gets help from pals like Mos Def, Ben Harper and younger bro Damien, creating a solid-smooth groove on songs like the title track and “Hey Baby.” He even sounds eerily like old Pops at times. Stephen Marley appears on Friday, May 9 at Freebird Live, 200 N. First St., Jacksonville Beach. Tickets are $26 in advance, $29 at the door. 246-BIRD.
