CHOOSING WINE AT PUBLIX

Lem Turner Road

Getting by, getting over and getting it done: Life along Lem Turner Road.

From its inception at exit 356 on Interstate 95 some 16 miles north to the hem of south Georiga, Lem Turner Road is study in self-reliance. It changes from a four-lane thoroughfare to a two-lane county road as it passes through a dizzying polyglot of urban human commerce and activity -- hate, love, redemption, fellowship, enterprise, industry and community -- crossing the Trout River up to the Walmart at Dunn Avenue, into piney woods, past a sod farm and on to the countrified reaches of Callahan. Here there's both sin and salvation. The dirt of life and the cleansing. There are so many churches and car washes, it's hard to keep count. For nasty: A lone customer at the Pop-A-Top, when asked what his problem is with President Obama, spouts, "I hate niggers." For sweet: A roofer in Callahan stops at Carrie's Florist after work to buy his wife roses.

Independence Day

Some of you will celebrate Independence Day remembering veterans and reading aloud from the Constitution. Others will no doubt carry signs in protest of the new socialist regime or attend one of those kooky “tea parties.” However you choose to mark the holiday, it will no doubt involve barbecue, beer and lots of fireworks. Northeast Florida has no shortage of Fourth of July festivities, which include concerts, kids’ activities, a motorcycle run, DJ shows, a film premiere, street parties and, yes, lots of fireworks. For a list of upcoming Independence Day events, click here.

Idol Finalist

Coming in 11th place on “American Idol” has its benefits. First off, you don’t have to do that post-season package tour. And you certainly don’t have to pretend you’re happy for the winner. Season 7 finalist Amanda Overmyer may have been one of the more unusual characters to grace the “AI” stage. A nurse from Little Rock who had an affinity for Harleys, Overmyer was a hard-rocking Joplinesque singer whose attitude rubbed some fans the wrong way. Now a soloist with her own production company, Overmyer, on tour in support of her record “Solidify,” performs on Friday, July 3 at The Pit at Brewsters, 14003 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville. Tickets are $15. 223-9850.
