Ernest Dickey rifles through a pile of donated clothing in Hemming Plaza on Jan. 6 during an impromptu event to benefit the homeless. Dickey says he came to Jacksonville from Virginia by bus two years ago to work a welding job, but his ID and birth certificate were stolen within two hours of his arrival. He camps in the woods at night on the Westside and uses a bus pass to come into town three days a week. "I got enough money this Christmas to buy a tent," Dickey says. "So at least I'm out of the elements."
