Riverkeeper Sunset Holiday Mingle
Environmental scientists, fish and wildlife conservationists, professors from Jacksonville University's marine sciences department, and general river health enthusiasts gathered at the St. Johns Riverkeeper office Dec. 12 at JU to enjoy the sunset and celebrate the accomplishments of the SJRK in 2013.
During the Riverkeeper Sunset Holiday Mingle event, the group presented awards, including the River Advocate award to artist and native plant enthusiast Jim Draper. Jim Alabiso, founder of Swim Across the St. Johns Project, spoke passionately about the importance of healthy wetlands.
Discussions amongst healthy water advocates ranged from man-made causes of toxic green algal blooms to the industrial waste being pumped into the river by corporations. The health of the river is correlated with the health of the citizens who live near it. The St. John’s Riverkeeper is calling upon the general population to help monitor the St. John’s River and protect this beautiful and valuable resource.
